Medical tattooing

Scar camouflage.

Custom-blended skin-tone pigment used to reduce the visible colour contrast between a suitable mature scar and the surrounding skin.

What it does

Soften contrast, not erase history.

Scar camouflage may be suitable for mature, pale surgical, injury, burn, self-harm or skin-graft scars. Pigments are mixed for the individual area and implanted gradually to bring the scar closer to the surrounding skin tone.

It does not remove a scar or change its texture. Where texture is the main concern, MCA scar revision may be recommended before pigment camouflage is considered.

Pigment is matched as closely as possible to your usual skin tone, but it cannot behave exactly like natural skin. Tattooed pigment does not tan, flush or change with the surrounding skin, so the contrast may appear different with sun exposure, temperature changes or seasonal changes in skin tone. This limitation will be discussed during your consultation.

Suitability

The scar must be ready.

Potentially suitable

Pale, flat and stable scars that are normally at least 12 months old and fully healed.

Not currently suitable

Scar camouflage is not suitable for scars that are red, darker than the surrounding skin, inflamed, infected, raised, keloid, unstable or still changing.

Pigment camouflage cannot lighten a dark or hyperpigmented scar. If texture, redness or pigmentation is the main concern, we will explain whether another treatment, further healing time or advice from a medical professional would be more appropriate.

Colour assessment and patch testing

A free consultation and colour assessment are required before treatment. Where appropriate, a small pigment test patch will be completed during the consultation at no additional cost. This allows us to assess the initial colour choice and how your skin responds before a full treatment is booked. The test area must be allowed to heal before full treatment can proceed.

Medical care

Tell us about ongoing hospital treatment, planned surgery or changes to the scar. Medical clearance may be required.

What to expect

Gradual, individual results.

Results develop gradually and multiple sessions may be required. Each session is charged separately. The number needed depends on the scar tissue, colour difference, treatment area and healing response.

Medical tattooing can reduce visibility, but no treatment can guarantee complete invisibility or a particular result. We explain realistic limitations before you decide.

Healing and maintenance

Allow the colour time to settle.

The colour may look darker, warmer or more noticeable immediately after treatment. It will soften and settle as the skin heals, so the result cannot be assessed straight away.

Pigment retention varies within scar tissue and future perfecting sessions or colour refreshes may be needed. Sun exposure, skin changes and natural fading can affect the appearance over time.
